A pet portrait can be created from observing a pet in real life. It can also be created from a photo of your pet as well.
You can create a pet portrait on your own if you want. However, if you do not want to or do not feel you can do your household companion justice by trying to draw or paint a representation of it, you can hire someone.
Whether you paint or draw a portrait of your pet yourself or hire someone else to do it, you may want to keep in mind a few tips. The most important aspect of this project would be to make sure you choose the best picture possible.
It does not necessary need to be the most serious picture. For instance, if you own a dog you may want to create (or have created for you) a picture of it catching a Frisbee, fetching a bone, or cuddling with a child.
You may even consider shooting a few photos of your dog while sleeping. This often makes for a very attractive shot that can be used to commemorate your pet even long after it passes away.
Of course, more formal poses of your pet are often used to create new artistic masterpieces. If this is what you prefer, you may want to take as many photos of your animal as possible to help a professional artist create as realistic of a drawn or painted pet portrait as possible.
